The Rue Morgue Murders

Words & Music: Bobby Shiflett

I was born in a nightmare. I wish it would stop.
The Rue Morgue murders. The band at the hop.
The people were dancing and Death had to smile.
He’d known the band for a while.

So I went to a party. But I arrived too late.
I could see by the bonfires, knights at the stake
The people running and Death had to grin.
He opened the door and let them in.

You can be persuaded by any old scheme
But can you see the nightmare in the American dream?
You don’t need prophets or a crystal ball.
To see the future, after all.

I was born in a nightmare. Still, I go on.
Just like Hollywood and Babylon.
So much for the cross. So much for the rose.
On and on it ever goes.

You can be persuaded by any old scheme
But can you see the nightmare in the American dream?
You don’t need prophets or a crystal ball.
To see the future, after all.
