Before and After

Words & Music: Bobby Shiflett

I can’t decide just whose side I’m on
Split down the middle, half dancing to a fiddle
Got to get downwind. I have to breathe again.
Leave the race behind before I lose my mind

It just depends on what you’re after
It’s not the same before as after

Water carries time and tastes like a bitter wine
Forget the sunshine if it profits nothing
Out of the gate. Sometimes, we start to late.
We live our whole lives in a goddamned lie.

It just depends on what you’re after
It’s not the same before as after.

Forget the gentle song. Forget the right and wrong.
Forget that you belong. We fled a light that blinds with darkness close behind.
Tomorrow suffer us not. The poison air from the melting pot.
We lose what we have got and plunge into a void.
Our secrets are destroyed.

Are we confused about what tools to use.
We color our faces and divide the human race.
What’s the use? Where are we going to?
Are we too blind to see that we’re just being used.

It just depends on what you’re after
It’s not the same before as after.
