Age of Anxiety

Words & Music: Bobby Shiflett

So clever, she walks beside him
He sees her from the corner of his eye
She thinks she’s invisible but she hates to see him cry
How their love is silent, while storms rage out of control
They’re miles distant in hurricane seas but they’re close enough to hold

Reason stands in shadows, on littered grounds of doubt
This is the age of anxiety, this is what it’s all about

Skyscrapers inch upward, and people inch along
They think about themselves too much to notice there is something wrong
So closer they walk together, but they never say a word
On the street there’s a block party, but the music cannot be heard

Reason stands in shadows. He sees her from the corner of his eye
This is the age of anxiety, but she hates to see him cry

So don’t walk away, don’t walk away from me.
It’s clear when you are here, you take the best of me
…And make the rest of me. So don’t ever walk away.
